Overview
Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design is located in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. The city stretches out over 14 islands and sits at the confluence of the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren. Stockholm’s residents and tourists enjoy the 100+ museums in the city which are dedicated to a wide variety of topics. Art students will especially appreciate the Nationalmuseum, housing art from the Middle Ages to the present and the Fotografiska–home of one of the world’s leading photography museums. Even the Stockholm metro system reflects Stockholm’s artistic ethic as it features art installations and is popularly known as the longest art gallery in the world.
Academics
Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design was founded in 1844 and has a student body of 900. The university has bachelor’s degree programs in Graphic Design and Illustration, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture and Furniture Design, Ceramics and Glass, Fine Art, Jewelry, and Textiles. Exchange students follow a pre-set schedule of classes corresponding to the major and semester of admission. The language of instruction at the school is Swedish, but individual departments will come to an agreement regarding how to offer instruction for students who do not speak Swedish. In practice, English is widely spoken in Sweden.
Housing
There is some housing available specifically for exchange students through the university.
Dates
Each Konstfack department specifies whether fall or spring semester is the best fit for particular exchanges. Fall semester may be challenging for PNCA students because fall semester starts late August and runs through mid January. Spring semester starts mid January and runs through early June.
Cost
Students pay Willamette tuition and can use their usual funding. Additional scholarships for study abroad are available for this program. Students are responsible for the costs of their own room and board.
